We recently received a heartfelt request from Anjay Krishna P J, a diligent fifth-semester BTech student specializing in Electronics and Communication at the National Institute of Technology Calicut. Anjay’s story is one of perseverance amidst adversity.
Nine years ago, Anjay lost his father. His widowed mother, who suffers from bone TB, faced a severe setback with an injury and fracture that left her unable to take on physically demanding work. To support their daily expenses and the education of Anjay and his 10 year old younger sister, the family had to take out loans totaling around ₹16 lakhs from nationalized banks, intended for long-term repayment. However, an additional ₹3 lakh borrowed from private lenders led to mounting pressure for immediate repayment.
Despite these hardships, Anjay’s academic performance has been exemplary, boasting a CGPA of 8.82 at the end of his fifth semester and an impressive SGPA scores of 9.43 and 9.41 in the third and fourth semesters respectively. Although awarded the E-Grantz scholarship by the Government, Anjay still struggled to cover the ₹9,000 and ₹13,000 required for hostel fees and establishment charges each semester. The family’s financial strain intensified with monthly loan repayments totaling about ₹68,800, compounded by the costs of education.
Anjay assured us of his commitment to his studies and his determination to further improve his CGPA in the coming semesters. Upon verifying his situation with the Governing Council of NITC and confirming its authenticity, we learned that NITC was also attempting to provide subsidies for his tuition and hostel fees from Student Welfare funds.
As Anjay’s request aligned with SEWA’s mission, our Executive Committee unanimously decided to support him on humanitarian grounds. We rallied the SEWA community, and the response was overwhelming. Generous donations poured in, showcasing the benevolent spirit of our supporters.
On June 16, 2024, our secretary and treasurer visited Anjay’s home in Trichur to personally hand over a cheque for ₹1,58,100, collected exclusively for his needs. This act of kindness and support will undoubtedly help Anjay continue his education and pave the way for a brighter future.
Thank you to everyone who contributed. Your generosity has made a profound impact on Anjay’s life, providing him with the stability and encouragement he needs to achieve his dreams. Let’s continue to support and uplift those in need, reaffirming our commitment to making a positive difference in the world.
Remember, every small act of kindness can create waves of positive change. Together, we can build a future where every student, regardless of their circumstances, has the chance to reach their full potential. Let’s keep making a difference, one life at a time.
