Procurement and Distribution of Smart Vision Glasses for Visually Impaired Students: A Novel project by RECCA Sewa Charitable Society
- RECCA Sewa Charitable Society has always proved to be an effective platform for our alumni to serve the needy among the society. True to its motto ‘Serve Eternally with Altruism’ we step into another area of charity, this time to help the bright among the blind to succeed in their career.
- Bangalore based firm SHG Technologies Pvt Ltd has come up with an innovative product ‘Smart Vision Glasses Assistive Device for Visually Impaired’. This is fitted on a goggle frame and connected to a smart phone. The phone is required to be installed with an app developed by the company. The device has five modes viz Spatial, Reading, Walking assistance, Facial Storage and Standby mode. The modes can be selected using Braille signs on the device. It has a FOV of 72 degrees and range 4 metre. In Spatial mode, it gives audio commands on the objects in front. In reading mode, it can read text in several languages including Malayalam and generate corresponding audio messages. Walking assistance mode helps the blind person to navigate on roads. Facial Storage mode facilitates storing photos of persons and retrieving it later for identification. Standby mode is for switching between various modes. Cost of the device is Rs. 30000/- plus GST.
- Executive Council, RECCA Sewa Charitable Society arranged for a demonstration of the above device The device was found very useful for visually impaired students. We decided to buy 10 such devices in the first phase in current financial year, total cost being Rs. 317360/- including GST. As there are many bright students among the visually impaired population amongst us, we could identify and shortlist ten such students with the help of Govt and Aided blind schools. This small assistance from us could help the students to smoothly pursue and succeed in their career.
- Executive Council appealed to all REC/NITC alumni to generously contribute so that we make a difference in the life of a few visually impaired students. However as we could not mobilize sufficient funds we decided to provide the same to 5 visually challenged students immediately and rest later as we get more funds
- We placed order for supply of Five Smart Vision Glasses Assistive
