SEWA decided to try out a new initiative this year wherein it could tie up with other like minded organisations to serve the needy.
Each year, the ladies wing (Martha Mariam Samajam) of St. Gregorious Malankara Orthodox Church, Bensalem, Pennsylvania, USA collect dresses for distribution to the needy as part of their Annual Charity Drive. However, they were unable to distribute the Indian outfits so collected. This year SEWA decided to step-in and help in transporting and distributing these to those who required them in Kerala.
The clothes so collected at USA was shipped to Cochin by SEWA, and transported by SEWA volunteers ( Hashim, AshokKumar, Gopalakrishnan ) to Wayanad after segregation and packaging. On 28th of May 2017, 220 Sarees were distributed among the deserving candidates in 22 wards of Meppadi Punchayat under the aegis of Kudambasree.
Snehasaden, an orphanage at Kalpetta for the mentally challenged was selected for distribution of the Salwaar Kameez sets so collected.
Church facilitated local logistics through their contacts in that area; and coordination among the SEWA team, Kudumbasree and Meppadi Punchayat was seamless, to successfully complete the initiative.
Way to go SEWA. This is just the beginning and we know that SEWA is raging to get involved in more such activities in future
